It Matters

Ever have this experience? At home, your kid doesn’t behave the way you would like- maybe they don’t say please and thank you, maybe they don’t clean up their breakfast dishes consistently, little things you nag them about and it's exhausting. And THEN that child goes and spends time with family or friends and you hear your child was so polite and tidy. Who is that now? MY kid? It is so nice to hear though and also the feeling of like “well I must be doing something right?!”

It feels like even when we think we aren’t making an impact or getting through when we talk to our kids…we actually are.

Our spring Parent Speaker Series webinar focuses on this topic exactly - the Power of Parents and how we have much more influence than we think. For our last CTC - DASD webinar of the year we spoke to Beth Bruton, from Holcomb Behavioral Health Systems, about how parents DO have the power to help their child make smarter, safer choices. A top reason kids list as to why they choose not to drink underage or use other substances is because they don’t want to disappoint their parents!

Other things Beth covers in the webinar include how to have ongoing, intentional conversations about the dangers and consequences of underage drinking and other drug use, why it is so important to delay alcohol use until the age of 21, and the role of peers and perceptions on youth decision making skills.

You can watch the webinar here and it will also be out soon as an episode of our Parent to Parent Podcast if you want to listen. With graduation, prom, and summer parties coming up these conversations are more important than ever. Your influence does matter, even if it doesn't always feel that way!

Happy Spring!
